Welcome to get to know the organisation behind one of the world's largest and most respected youth exchange programs. Rotary is a global network of committed people who believe in the power of international exchange to build peace and understanding across borders.
What is Rotary? A short history
Rotary International was founded in Chicago, USA, in 1905 by the lawyer Paul Harris. His vision was to create a meeting place where people from different professions could exchange ideas and build valuable connections. Over time, Rotary developed into a service organisation aiming to make positive and lasting change in local communities and around the world.
Today Rotary is a global network with over 1.4 million members spread across more than 46,000 clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas. Rotary has been present in Sweden since 1926 and engages thousands of members.
Youth exchange – a cornerstone of Rotary’s work
Rotary Youth Exchange has a long and proud history spanning more than 50 years. The program is a central part of Rotary’s commitment to young people and international understanding. Each year, thousands of young people around the world get the chance to experience a new culture, learn a new language and grow as global citizens through our exchange programs, such as the year-long exchange and shorter summer exchanges.
The program is run entirely on a voluntary basis by committed Rotary members. That is why we can offer high-quality exchange programs at a very competitive program fee.
Our values and your exchange year
Rotary’s work is infused with strong values: service, fellowship, diversity, integrity and leadership. These values are also fundamental within Rotary Youth Exchange.
Safety and security
We work continuously on internal quality assurance and certification of our exchange countries. Your safety is always the top priority, and we have an extensive global network of experienced volunteers.
Personal growth
Through the exchange you are challenged to grow, become more independent and develop your intercultural competence.
International understanding
By immersing yourself in another culture, you contribute to greater understanding and tolerance across borders – in line with Rotary's goal of building peace.
Our network – your support during the exchange year
As a Rotary exchange student you become part of a large and supportive network. In Sweden you are in contact with your sponsoring Rotary club and the district’s youth exchange committee. When you arrive in your host country, a local Rotary club and dedicated contact people are there for you, and you live with carefully selected host families who welcome you as a family member.
In addition there is Rotex, an organisation of former exchange students, which often arranges activities and shares valuable experience. This strong network of volunteer forces is unique to Rotary Youth Exchange and a decisive factor in making your exchange year a safe and positive experience.
More than just an exchange year
Rotary Youth Exchange is just one example of Rotary’s commitment to young people and community development. We also support other youth programs and projects aimed at developing the potential of young leaders and promoting positive change. By choosing an exchange program with Rotary, you become part of a larger movement working for a better world.
